On the back of a stellar all-around performance, hosts South Africa demolished Bangladesh by 10 wickets on February 21 (Tuesday) at Newlands, Cape Town. As a result, the Proteas women stormed into the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup. South Africa will now cross swords against England in the knock-out game.
Chasing a below-par target of 114 runs, openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits stitched an unbeaten alliance of 117 runs and rolled out South Africa's road to victory with 13 balls to spare. Wolvaardt remained unbeaten on 66 runs off 56 balls and smacked seven fours and one six during her stay at the crease. Brits also registered a half-century, scoring an unbeaten 50 runs off 51 balls with the help of four fours.
Bangladesh bowlers lacked any sort of venom to trouble the opposition batters as the hosts gave the crown plenty to cheer about.
After winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana decided to bat first, a decision that didn't yield the desired result. Opener Murshida Khatun was dismissed for a six-ball duck in the third ball of the third over. From thereon, the wickets kept tumbling for Bangladesh as South Africa bowlers struck to their game plan and asked tough questions off opposition batters.
Sultana was the top scorer for Bangladesh. She scored 30 runs off 34 balls with the help of two fours. Sobhana Mostary added 27 runs off 30 balls while rest of the batters either couldn't get a start or failed to convert the start into a substantial knock.
For South Africa, Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka bagged two wickets each while Nonkululeko Mlaba and Shabnim Ismail bagged a wicket each.
