Indian cricket fans around the world are bursting with anticipation for the next major ICC tournament, but their wait will not be too long, with the Women's T20 World Cup 2023 to kick off on February 10 in South Africa. India will hope to end their dry run in the competition, having reached the final in the previous edition in 2020, but losing the final to record five-time champions Australia.
The side has finished in the top 4 four times in their history, with three semifinals and one final appearance in the competition. This is considerably better than India, who has reached just one final and two semifinals since winning the inaugural edition in 2007. Here, we map out India's progress in the men's T20 World Cup, across all eight editions.
Men's T20 World Cup 2007 Winner:
The first-ever T20 World Cup (Men's and Women's) took place in 2007 and is considered among the greatest achievements of the Indian cricket team. Reeling from a poor 2007 ODI World Cup performance, a completely revamped side made the long trip to South Africa, led by MS Dhoni, and won the inaugural edition of the tournament, beating bitter rivals Pakistan in the final.
Men's T20 World Cup 2009 Winner: Super 8s
India cruised through the first round of group games with easy wins over Ireland and Bangladesh in Group A. They topped the group and moved to the Super 8s, but it collapsed after that, with losses to England, West Indies and South Africa, and finishing at the bottom of the table.
Men's T20 World Cup 2010 Winner: Super 8s
Once again, India topped their group, consisting of South Africa and Afghanistan, with two straight wins. And once again, they faltered in the Super 8s, falling to the bottom of Group 2, losing their three matches to Australia, Sri Lanka and West Indies.
Men's T20 World Cup 2012 Winner: Super 8s
Another positive performance in the initial group stages could not convert into a performance in the Super 8. They beat England and Afghanistan in Group A of the first round. In the Super 8s, India missed a semi-final spot because of a lower net run rate than Australia and Pakistan.
Men's T20 World Cup 2014 Winner: Runners Up
India finally ended their poor Super 8s in the new format of the competition, where they directly made it to the Super 10 stage by virtue of their ICC ranking. They topped Group 2 with four straight wins over West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh, and then beat South Africa in the semi-finals. However, they lost in the final to Sri Lanka.
Men's T20 World Cup 2016 Winner: Semi-final
It was the first time that India hosted the mega event, and after losing their only match in Group 2 against New Zealand, they came back with three straight wins over Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, finishing second and making it to the semis. They lost to eventual champions West Indies in the final of the competition.
Men's T20 World Cup 2021 Winner: Super 12
It was another poor performance in the T20 World Cup for India. They lost to Pakistan in the opening game, and then against New Zealand, which hurt their chances of the top-2 finish in group 2, finishing three behind Pakistan and New Zealand.
Men's T20 World Cup 2022 Winner: Semi-final
Overcoming their 2021 blues, India topped their Super 12 group ahead of Pakistan, South Africa, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe respectively. They faced off against England in the final, but were easily brushed aside with a debilitating 10-wicket loss.
