The taboo surrounding same-sex marriage is persistent even in the 21st century. Athletes have been often seen spreading awareness and acceptance for the same and the latest to join the cause is Australia women's team pacer Megan Schutt, who is the joint second most wicket taker in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2023. Megan married her long-time girlfriend Jess Holyoake in 2019 and recently slammed the myths surrounding same-sex relationships in women's sports.
Schutt has been vocal about the myths and did promote the ideology when she married Jess.
During an interview with insight sports, she didn't hold back and slammed everyone who claim that "coercion" is behind the higher rate of gay athletes in team sports. She said - "Some a****s can say things like, 'you've been coerced because your teammates are same sex'. Coercion - everyone in cricket is gay, that's why you're gay. That comes back to thinking that being gay is a choice. Which it is not."
Many athletes are coming out but there is still a taboo which holds athletes from expressing themselves. Thus, Schutt believes that a lot needs to be done to generalise it.
"The old standard reply when someone comes out with 'it's 2023, no one cares, you don't need to come out' ... actually, it does f***g matter, because there are still kids out there that would rather be dead than gay," she added.
The one area where females dominate more than Men is the inclusion and advancement of these subjects. Adding to that she feels male athletes should do the same and feel secure. "As I said, gay women have it easier and until men can feel comfortable that's going to be the true barometer really," Schutt further stated.
