How Shafali-led India qualified for U19 Women's T20 World Cup semi-finals despite massive loss to Australia at Super Six stage

Shafali Verma-led India have all but sealed their semi-final spot in the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023. Despite a demoralising loss to Australia in their first Super Six clash, India are at the top of Group 1 with net run rate (NRR) of 2.844.

On January 23, Australia beat United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their second Super Six clash by six wickets with 29 balls remaining. However, the margin of victory was not enough to go past India’s NRR. After beating USA, Australia’s NRR is 2.210 as they are placed second in Group 1 table.

Why India, Australia have same points?

Australia have same number of points (6) as India despite two wins at Super Six stage. The reason behind it is that three teams from Group A that progressed to Group 1 are Bangladesh, Australia and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh stunned Australia as they registered their first ever win against the Aussies in a World Cup event. That’s why Australia carried forward just two points to Super Six and now have six points against their name.

On the other hand, India had four points as they had beaten South Africa and United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Group D clashes. Both South Africa and UAE advanced to the Super Six stage which meant that India had four points before playing against Australia.

Mission near-impossible for South Africa, Bangladesh

Now, only two Group 1 Super Six clashes are remaining. South Africa will take on Sri Lanka on January 24 whereas Bangladesh will face UAE. Both South Africa (0.490) and Bangladesh (0.268) need massive wins to surpass Australia’s NRR.

The semi-finalists

In all likelihood, India and Australia will progress to the semi-final stage. From Group 2, England and New Zealand are expected to qualify for the semi-final stage.

Once again, India are expected to go up against old foes New Zealand in another knockout encounter. The semi-final will be played on January 27 at Potchefstroom. In the second semi-final England are likely to take on Australia.
