Indian team exhibited a terrific batting show as they registered a mammoth total of 317 runs losing eight wickets in 50 overs against West Indies, in the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup. Indian opener Smriti Mandhana (123 runs off 119 balls) and vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur (109 runs off 107 deliveries) showed amazing batting skills to help their side in reaching a big total.
Harmanpreet's records
Harmanpreet became the first Indian to score three centuries in the Women’s ODI World Cup. Previously, Indian skipper Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana had scored two centuries in the mega event.
In T20I cricket also, Harmanpreet has a sensational record as she is the only Indian to score a century in Women's T20 World Cup.
In the match against West Indies, Mandhana started attacking the Caribbean bowlers and she eventually smashed 13 boundaries and two sixes to score 123 runs. On the other end, under-fire Harmanpreet’s innings was comprised of 10 boundaries and two sixes.
Record for Mithali
Indian skipper Mithali also achieved a rare milestone as she overtook Australia's Belinda Clark for most appearances as captain in the 50-over World Cup.
Previously, the Indian skipper became the first female cricketer and third overall to feature in six World Cup events.
Former Australia skipper Clark had led her team in 101 ODI matches. In World Cup, she led the Australia team in 23 matches. The former Australia skipper had won 21 out of the 23 matches and had to face just one defeat in World Cup events.
On the other hand, Mithali has led team India on 24 occasions and out of the previous 23 matches she has won 14 matches at a win percentage of 63.63.
Previously, Indian team started their World Cup with a victory against arch-rivals Pakistan. Batting first, Indian team had registered a total of 244 runs for the loss of seven wickets. In reply, Pakistan team could only reach a paltry total of 137 runs losing all their 10 wickets.
But in the second match of the tournament, Indian team had to suffer a defeat against hosts New Zealand. Batting first, New Zealand scored a solid total of 260 runs losing nine wickets. In reply, the Indian sidewere all out for a total of 198 runs in 46.4 overs.
