Ex-Australia spinner contradicts popular opinion, stands in favour of Rohit Sharma's 3-Match WTC final proposal

Team India's hopes of winning another ICC trophy came to a screeching halt after Australia thumped Rohit Sharma & Co. in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval on June 11 (Sunday). India ended up losing the summit clash by a huge margin of 209 runs. As a result, the wait for another ICC title elongated further for India. After the match, India captain Rohit reflected on the country's defeat and floated an interesting idea pertaining to the WTC final. The Indian skipper said that a WTC final should consist of a best-of-three-match series.

"A three-match series would be nice ... you work hard for two years and then you have only one shot at it. You cannot get into that momentum that you need for Test cricket. In the next cycle...a three-match series would be ideal," Rohit said in the press conference after the match.

"June is not the only month we should play the final. It can be played any time of the year and anywhere in the world. Not just in England," he added.

While most of the former cricketers disagreed with Rohit's idea, former Australia spinner Brad Hogg has voiced support in favour of the Indian skipper.

"I agree with Rohit Sharma that the WTC Final should be a three-match series, but this time it was a one-match final and Australia won that, and I am not taking away from that. It is about the game moving forward. I think there should be two divisions with four teams each - the top four teams in division one and the rest in division two. The associates can be in division three and work their way up," Hogg said on his Youtube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda.

The ex-Aussie wrist spinner also suggested certain tweaks to the WTC format that can make the competition even more compelling for the fans.

"The top two teams in division one play a three-match final on the home soil of the top team in the table. Then the teams ranked three and four in division one play against teams that finished top two in division two," Hogg continued.

"Team three of division one will play at home against team two of division two, and then team one of division two will play team three of division one," he added.
