Before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah stated that India had no regrets over their thumping of New Zealand. On Friday, November 22, India will kick off their Australian trip with the Perth Test. India needs four victories going into the series in order to advance straight to the World Test Championship Final.
Bumrah's big remark
At the pre-match news conference before the first Test match in Perth, Bumrah highlighted the game's unique feature: regardless of a team's victory or defeat the previous day, they all start from scratch on a new day.
"Even if you win, you start from 0. If you lose, you start from 0. That's the beauty of cricket. Obviously, when we won the World Cup, it didn't mean we would become complacent in other series. That's how I am looking at. Obviously, we were disappointed and down that we had a tough series last time. But, we are not carrying any baggage. We come with a fresh mindset, and different opposition. And we come to learn from the changes that have happened in the team. We are not carrying any baggage from India. We are trying to be positive and play good cricket," Jasprit Bumrah said in the pre-match press conference
The absence of Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma in the first Test match will make things difficult for the Indian squad. Gill fractured his thumb during training before the first Test, and Rohit is currently on paternity leave. For the first time in this rivalry, fast bowlers will lead both sides in the opening Test match, with Jasprit Bumrah taking Sharma's place as captain.
Because of his history of fantastic performance in Australia, Virat Kohli will be the centre of attention for the Test series. Despite his terrible performance against New Zealand, Kohli will be hoping for a strong run given he has six hundreds down under. In the three Test matches against the Kiwis, when the squad lost 0–3, Kohli only managed to score 93 runs.
After losing to New Zealand, India lost the top spot in the World Test Championship standings, but they will be hoping to replicate their 2018–19 and 2020–21 feats during the current tour.
