India's stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah was forced to leave the field midway through Day 2 of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday, January 4. Bumrah, who has been a key figure in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, experienced discomfort and was unable to continue bowling after the lunch break.
Big update on Jasprit Bumrah's injury
Following his departure from the field, Bumrah was seen leaving the stadium in a van with members of the Indian team's support staff. Reports indicate that he was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney for further medical evaluation, including scans.
Meanwhile, Sports Tak has learnt that Bumrah has returned to the Indian dressing room after getting the medical attention. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir was also spotted walking out of dug out and going to check on Bumrah in the dressing room. However, scan reports on Bumrah's injury is expected to come in the evening.
Bumrah had bowled effectively in the first session, claiming the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne and surpassing Bishen Singh Bedi's record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a Test series in Australia.
However, after bowling one over following the lunch break, Bumrah departed from the field. While the initial impression suggested it wasn't a serious issue, his subsequent departure from the stadium with the team's support staff raised concerns. Notably, he was not wearing his playing whites but instead was dressed in his training kit, further fueling speculation about a possible injury.
Indian bowlers completely dominated Austrlian batters on Day 2 of the Sydney Test, dismissing Australia for 181 runs and securing a narrow four-run lead in the first innings.
Mohammed Siraj (3/51), Prasidh Krishna (4/42), and Nitish Reddy's (2/32) ran through the Australian batting line-up with their exceptional bowling. Captain Jasprit Bumrah also took two crucial wickets before being forced to leave the field for medical scans. Beau Webster, making his Test debut, impressed with a brilliant 57 runs off 105 balls, emerging as the top scorer for Australia.
