Watch: Shreyas Iyer gets reprieve after ball rubs past the stumps but zing bails didn't fall off during 1st Test vs Bangladesh

Shreyas Iyer's resilient knock after Cheteshwar Pujara's sturdy show rescued India from a precarious position of 48/3 to 278/6 at the close of Day 1's play of the first Test against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram, on Wednesday (December 14).

Pujara (90 off 203) once again performed the saviour act but miss the century by a whisker but Iyer remained rocksolid on course for his hundred as finished the day on 82 off 169 unscathed.

But something interesting happened in 84th over which drew everyone attention when Shreyas got a narrow escape from going back to pavilion. On fifth ball of the Ebadot Hossain's over, the ball swung back into Shreyas as the ball kept low and brushed off the stumps making a noise. Surprisingly, despite ball hit the stumps the zing bails didn't come off. The replas showed that the bails lit up and moved a bit but didn't fall off and Shreyas remained unscathed. Incidentally, one of the bails was changed in the very same over after the lights inside had malfunctioned.

Here's the video..

Credit should also be given to Rishabh Pant (46 off 45 balls) whose counter-attacking knock was of immense value as he was the first one to hold the opposition by the scruff of its neck after skipper KL Rahul (22), Shubman Gill (20) and Virat Kohli (1) were dismissed cheaply within the first 90 minutes of play.

Till Pant was at the crease, it seemed like he was batting on a different track. Honours were shared on the opening day with Islam emerging as the hero for Bangladesh and showing he has the potential to come out of the shadows of his more illustrious skipper Shakib Al Hasan.

India need to win both the matches of the series to stay alive in the race for the World Test Championship final. Regular India skipper Rohit Sharma misses the game due to a thumb injury therefore KL Rahul is captaining the side.
