England announce squad for fourth Test, left-arm spinner with 7 wickets makes comeback after 8 years to replace Shoaib Bashir

England Cricket Board (ECB) on July 15 announced their 14-member Test squad for the fourth Test at The Old Trafford, Manchester, starting July 23. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson has replaced an injured Shoaib Bashir in the squad. Bashir suffered a broken finger during the Lord's Test and has been ruled out for the remainder of the Test series. 

For the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, all-rounder Jamie Overton and pacer Samuel James Cook have been released from the squad. They will represent their respective counties in the ongoing County Championship 2025. 

"Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire," England men's national selector, Luke Wright, said in a statement released by the ECB.

Dawson's last Test appearance was against South Africa at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in July 2017. From three Tests, he has seven wickets at an average of 42.57. He is a handy batter down the order. He has scored 84 runs froms ix innings, including an unbeaten 66.

Dawson's first-class record

The 35-year-old has played 212 first-class games and bagged 371 wickets at an average of 31.54, including 15 five-wicket hauls. With the bat, he has 10,731 runs from 341 innings at an average of 35.29, including 18 centuries and 56 half-centuries.

Dawson's recent County form

In the ongoing County Championship Division ONe 2025, he has scored 536 runs from nine games at an average of 44.66, including one century and two half-centuries. The veteran spinner has 21 wickets from as many games at an average of 40.44, including a five-wicket haul.

In the last two seasons, he has been named the PCA Player of the year for his consistent performances for Hampshire.
