Harry Brook was well on course of a well deserved century until Prasidh Krishna gave him a heartbreak to remember on Day 3 of the first Test between India and England at Headingley. Prasidh Krishna got the better of Harry Brook when the England batter was batting at 99.
With this Brook bagged an unwanted record, becoming the first batter in three years to be dismissed while agonizingly close to a century, at a score of 99 runs. The last instance of a batter falling just one run short of a hundred occurred when Australian cricketer Travis Head was dismissed for 99 against the West Indies in Perth back in 2022. Before Brook, the most recent English batter to experience this heartbreak was Jonny Bairstow, who was dismissed for 99 against South Africa in Manchester in 2017.
In the overall context of English cricket, Brook's dismissal marks the 16th occasion of an English batter being dismissed on the score of 99. Interestingly, former middle-order batsman Ian Bell holds a unique record as the only Englishman to have been dismissed on 199, just one short of a double century.
Looking at instances of batsmen being dismissed on 99 against India, the last such occurrence was in 2014 when Shaun Marsh of Australia was dismissed at that score in a match played in Melbourne.
