Jamie Smith took just 80 ball to race to his century

India's star wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith stormed into history books after cracking a blistering century on Day 3 of the second Test against India at Edgbaston. The 24-year-old hammered the fastest Test century against India by an English batter. Coming in at number seven for England during the first session on the third day of the second Test match at Edgbaston, Smith launched a fierce assault on the Indian bowlers, dispatching the ball to all parts of the ground. He reached his maiden Test century against India in just 80 balls. Smith crossed the coveted 100-run mark with a boundary, hammering a four off Ravindra Jadeja on the third delivery of the 47th over in England's first innings.

However, the overall record for the fastest Test century against Team India still belongs to former Australian opener David Warner. Warner achieved this feat in just 69 balls during a Test match played at the WACA in Perth from January 13th to 15th, 2012. Following Warner is South Africa's AB de Villiers, who reached his century in 75 balls during the December 2010 Test match held at SuperSport Park in Centurion. Pakistan's Shahid Afridi also features in this list, having scored a century in 78 balls against India at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore in January 2006.

Batters with fastest ton in Tests against India:

David Warner (Australia) – 69 balls in Perth (January 2012)
AB de Villiers (South Africa) – 75 balls in Centurion (December 2010)
Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) – 78 balls in Lahore (January 2006)
Jamie Smith (England) – 80 balls in Birmingham (July 2025)*
Kamran Akmal (Pakistan) – 81 balls in Lahore (January 2006)
Adam Gilchrist (Australia) – 84 balls in Mumbai (February-March 2001)
Clive Lloyd (West Indies) – 85 balls in Bengaluru (November 1974)
Ben Duckett (England) – 88 balls in Rajkot (February 2024)

Overall, Smith's explosive 80-ball century against India ranks as the joint third-fastest hundred by an English batter in the Test match format. Topping this list is the overall record for the fastest Test century, held by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum. In the first innings of his final Test match, played against Australia in Christchurch in February 2016, McCullum achieved his century in an astonishing 54 balls.

England batters with fastest century in Tests:

Gilbert Jessop – 76 balls vs Australia at The Oval (August 1902)
Jonny Bairstow – 77 balls vs New Zealand in Nottingham (June 2022)
Harry Brook – 80 balls vs Pakistan in Rawalpindi (December 2022)
Jamie Smith (England) – 80 balls in Birmingham (July 2025)*

Ian Botham – 86 balls vs Australia in Leeds (July 1981)
Ian Botham – 86 balls vs Australia in Manchester (August 1981)

When the chips were down and England were wobbling at 84/5, it was Smith who rose to the occasion and rescued his team from a precarious position to 249/5. He formed a robust 165-run partnership with Harry Brook, who is also unscathed on the crease after scoring a well-built 91 by lunch on Day 3.
