Yashasvi Jaiswal lived up to the expectations and continued his hot run in the longest format as he struck a historic century on Day 1 of the first Test against England on June 20 at Headingly, Leeds. Jaiswal accomplished a towering feat by becoming the first Indian cricketer to score a century in his debut Test match played on both Australian and English soil.
Yashasvi Jaiswal lights up Headingley with historic century
Jaiswal reached his century with a single off the final ball of the 49th over of India's first innings, bowled by Brydon Carse on Friday, June 20, 2025. This achievement places him in an elite group of Indian batsmen. While Motganhalli Jaisimha, Sunil Gavaskar, and Jaiswal are the three Indians who have scored a century in their first Test in Australia, and six batsmen—Vijay Manjrekar, Abbas Ali Baig, Sandeep Patil, Sourav Ganguly, Murali Vijay, and Jaiswal—have achieved this milestone in their maiden Test on English soil, Jaiswal stands alone as the only Indian to have accomplished this distinction in both countries. He had previously scored 161 runs in the second innings of his debut Test in Australia, which took place in November 2024 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Centuries for India in maiden Test in England
146 – Murali Vijay (Nottingham, 2014)
133 – Vijay Manjrekar (Leeds, 1952)
131 – Sourav Ganguly (Lord’s 1996)
129* – Sandeep Patil (Manchester, 1982)
112 – Abbas Ali Baig (Manchester, 1959)
100* – Yashasvi Jaiswal (Leeds, 2025)
During his innings, Jaiswal displayed aggressive intent, as he struck 16 fours and one six for the Indian team. He has also formed a solid partnership of 129 runs for the third wicket with captain Shubman Gill, who has also smashed a century.
Later, Ben Stokes hunted Jaiswal down in the 53rd over and the Indian opener returned to the hut after scoring 101 off 158 balls.
At the close of Day 1, India were well placed at 359/3 Gill (127*) and Pant (65) intact on the crease.
Notably, while this is Jaiswal's sixth Test match for India against England, he made his debut in the red-ball format against the West Indies in July 2023. With this century, he becomes the seventh Indian batsman to score a century in a Test match played at Headingley in Leeds, joining the esteemed company of Vijay Manjrekar, MAK Pataudi, Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sourav Ganguly. So far in this series against England, Jaiswal has accumulated 812 runs across 10 innings. His prolific form was also evident in the previous five-match Test series against England, where he amassed a remarkable total of 712 runs, including two double centuries.
