Shubman Gill broke tons of records on the second day of the Edgbaston Test against England as the batter scored a highly impressive double-hundred. The 25-year-old's knock of 269 was pivotal to the Men in Blue posting a formidable first-inning total of 587. With the incredible knock, Gill became the Indian captain with the highest individual score on foreign soil in the history of Test cricket.
However, as Gill scored his double-century, former England cricketer Michael Atherton took the opportunity to take a dig on both Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, stating how both of them were never able to score double-tons on English soil in their respective illustrious careers.
"Shubman Gill at No.4 is filling in the big shoes... Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar's slots, but neither of those two has made a double century in England," Atherton said while commentating.
Atherton further praised Gill for his stunning innings, stating that it was a 'masterful' performance from the Indian skipper. The 25-year-old pounced on the loose deliveries from England bowlers and didn't let them settle throughout his knock.
Atherton wasn't shy in showering praise on Gill
"It has been a masterful performance from Gill - an utterly chanceless innings. He has not looked like giving England a sniff at any moment, and there has been an air of inevitability about it all. He is a gorgeous driver through the off-side, has such a flowing game," Atherton stated.
Following the conclusion of Day 2, Gill opened up on his fantastic knock and said that he worked very hard on his batting ahead of the commencement of the series. He further shared that he is very satisfied with the results that he has got so far.
"I worked on a few things before the series as well, that I thought might be important for me going into Test cricket. Looking at the results, they are working for me," Gill told Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, after posting a mammoth total of 587, the Indian bowlers made a brilliant start as Akash Deep dismissed both Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope for ducks. Zak Crawley also ended up losing his wicket to Mohammed Siraj as India were all over England, who had been restricted to 25/3 at one stage.
However, the duo of Joe Root and Harry Brook ensured that the hosts did not lose any more wickets for the remainder of the day. The Three Lions wrapped up Day 2 on 72/3, trailing by 510 runs with Root unbeaten on 18 and Brook batting on 30. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top on the third day of the Edgbaston Test.
