The fifth Test between India and England is heading towards a thrilling finish

Team India received a major boost ahead of Day 3 of the ongoing fifth and final Test against England at the Kennington Oval on August 2. With both teams having been dismissed once, the third day's play is now in progress, and India is batting for the second time. The cameras captured a notable arrival during the first hour of play: India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma, who was seen entering the stadium to cheer for Shubman Gill's brigade.

Rohit Sharma had previously made headlines with his surprise retirement from Test cricket just before the selection meeting for the England series. This was followed a week later by Virat Kohli's retirement from the longest format of the game. Both cricketing legends are now focusing solely on their careers in ODIs. Interestingly, Rohit, who had captained India in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, had dropped himself from the final Test of that series due to his poor form.

Talking about the match, thanks to the batting heroics of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Akash Deep, India's lead surpassed 100 runs during the first session on Day 3. Akash, who came in as a nightwatchman on Day 2, is still unbeaten on the crease at 53. Meanwhile, Yashasvi has already reached the fifty-run mark and is now looking to convert it into a century.

With three days of play still remaining, India will be aiming to build a lead of more than 400 runs. This is a crucial goal, especially considering that England successfully chased down a massive target of 371 in the first Test match of this five-match series, which they currently lead 2-1.
