Suryakumar Yadav has become the fifth Indian batter to score a century in T20I cricket after Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda. Surya rose to the occasion after India’s top-order succumbed to the scoreboard pressure in high-scoring run chase.
Batting at no.4, Suryakumar revived India’s run chase at Trent Bridge, Nottingham in the final T20I of the series. He also became the first Indian batter after Rahul to score a century batting at no.4 or lower in the format.
His 117-run knock is the second-highest T20I score by an Indian batter after Rohit (118). The 31-year-old also broke Australia's Glenn Maxwell's record (113) of highest T20I score at no.4.
Surya reached his maiden T20I century from 48 deliveries in the 17th over of the run chase with a boundary off David Willey. He is the third Indian batter to score a T20I century against England. Also, he has the highest score in India-England T20I clashes.
He shared a 119-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer which is the highest for fourth wicket or lower for India. The unorthodox batter hit 14 fours and six sixes in his knock scoring 92 of his runs from boundaries. He reached his half-century from 32 deliveries. Later, he breached the three figures from 16 more deliveries.
Despite Surya's 117, India lost the game by 17 runs as no other batter provided the much-needed support. The second top-run scorer in the run chase was Iyer who scored 28 runs from 23 deliveries.
For full-member nations, it is the joint third-highest score by a batter in a run chase. Also, it is the second-highest score in an unsuccessful run chase by a batter.
