Surya-Gill show cut-short by incessant rain, 2nd ODI gets called off as India miss chance to win series

It was supposed to be a blockbuster Sunday but then it wasn't. The rain gods did not allow the second ODI to be played at Seddon Park, Hamilton as it was called off after 12.5 overs were bowled in India's innings. Hosts are still leading the ODI series by 1-0 with final to be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

After a delayed start, Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to field first. In the fifth over, it started to drizzle and caused a few hours delay. Overs were lost and the ODI was reduced to 29-overs per side game.

Shortly after the play resumed, Matt Henry got the wicket of skipper Shikhar Dhawan. The opener failed to clear the mid-off fielder with the chip shot and was caught by Lockie Ferguson. As overs were lost, Suryakumar was promoted up the order as he walked out to bat at no.3.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill was looking solid in the middle. He even hit Henry for a six in the eighth over. After taking his time initially, Suryakumar unleashed himself as well and hit two sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 25-ball 34. On the other end, Gill scored 45 runs from 42 deliveries including four fours and one six.

When rain had the final say, India had 89/1 on the board after 12.5 overs. The no result in the second ODI means that India cannot win the ODI series and only make it even if they manage to outclass New Zealand on November 30.

Rain has played spoilsport a few times in the limited-overs series. The first T20I at Sky Stadium, Wellington was called off without a ball being bowled. Later, the third T20I ended in a bizarre tie as per DLS method as rain stopped play when India had scored the DLS par score.

Earlier, at the coin toss, Dhawan made two changes to the side. Deepak Hooda replaced Sanju Samson's in the first ODI, India lacked the sixth bowling option as New Zealand chased down 307.
