Prioritising international duties over franchise riches, New Zealand’s white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner has turned down a lucrative proposal from the Big Bash League. The Adelaide Strikers made a strong push to sign the spinner, but Santner ultimately chose to stay focused on the Black Caps’ marquee red-ball encounters against India and Australia.

Reflecting on his decision, Santner acknowledged the financial appeal of the BBL offer, admitting he briefly weighed the opportunity. However, the prospect of featuring in high-profile international fixtures proved far more compelling. Speaking to the New Zealand Herald, he explained that even if his role in the Test setup isn't guaranteed for every single match, contributing to the team during such a massive home and away summer remains his top priority.
"When you look ahead to the summer we've got, India here for white ball and Tests and Australia away - there's not many bigger than that - it's quite an exciting time," Santner said.
"The offer was good, I'm not going to lie. They knew it would have to be a good offer for me to entertain it with contracting and what would come up," he added.
New Zealand's busy home calendar
New Zealand’s incoming schedule features a heavy home-and-away workload, starting with a full series against India—highlighted by two Test matches before heading across the Tasman to face Australia in a four-Test battle. At 34, Santner remains firmly committed to leading the national white-ball side, emphasizing that retaining the captaincy and maintaining his national focus outweighed the temptation of a freelance arrangement. He noted that navigating a captaincy role while forfeiting a central contract felt counterproductive at this point in his career.
Walking away from a guaranteed six-figure, multi-year deal is a considerable sacrifice for a veteran athlete—especially one coming off a recent shoulder injury sustained during his IPL stint with the Mumbai Indians. Where many players at a similar career junction might have opted for the financial security of overseas leagues, Santner chose to double down on his commitment to the Black Caps.
