In a commendable display of fielding excellence, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was awarded the Impact Fielder medal by fielding coach T Dilip after India's commanding victory against South Africa in the final T20I at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. This series, which concluded with a 1-1 tie, showcased intense competition, especially after the first match was abandoned due to rain and South Africa clinched the second match by five wickets.
In the post-match gathering, Dilip addressed the team, announcing the continuation of the tradition of honoring outstanding fielding efforts with medals. However, unlike the practice during the ODI World Cup where medals were awarded after each game, it was decided that they would now be presented at the end of each series. The 'Impact Fielder of the Series' would be the new accolade to recognize the most influential fielder throughout the series.
Dilip highlighted three players who were in contention for this honor. The first was Rinku Singh, commended for his exceptional effort and awareness on the field. The second nominee was Yashasvi Jaiswal, recognized for his vital contributions in taking crucial catches. Finally, Siraj was named the third contender, praised for his outstanding fielding skills, a remarkable feat for a fast bowler.
Ultimately, Siraj was chosen to receive the Impact Fielder medal. Dilip remarked on Siraj's consistent dedication to fielding, as vividly demonstrated during the ODI World Cup. Siraj, upon receiving the medal, expressed his gratitude, noting that his perseverance since the World Cup had paid off with this recognition.
"We talk about making a difference not just in one match but throughout the series. The perseverance with which he was going through the World Cup is still there. Every time he bowls, he comes back and dives and throws the ball. Today he made the difference in the field with the direct hit. Earlier, it was with his boundary line fielding," said Dilip while presenting the medal to Siraj.
The ceremony not only celebrated Siraj's individual achievement but also underscored the team's focus on enhancing fielding standards. As India gears up for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, beginning on December 17, the team carries forward the momentum and high spirits from their recent T20I series performance.
