India and South Africa shared the trophy after the two-Test series ended in a 1-1 draw at Newlands, Cape Town on January 2. India beat South Africa by seven wickets in a record 107 overs that lasted only five sessions. As the players of both teams gathered for the trophy presentation, Virat Kohli entertained them with his antics. He raised both his hands in the air while squatting followed by posing like boxers do before a fight. The players were left in splits as Kohli had his fun during the ceremony after India wrapped up the second Test within two days.
Earlier, Kohli missed out on a chance to finish off the run chase on Day 2 as he lost his wicket to Marco Jansen trying to play an aggressive shot. He departed after scoring 12 runs from 11 deliveries including two boundaries. In the first innings, he was the top scorer for India. He scored 46 runs from 59 innings including six fours and a six. He was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada as India suffered a record-breaking collapse, losing six wickets without adding a single run to the score.
Also, Kohli ended the series as India’s highest run-scorer. He scored 172 runs from four innings at an average of 43 including a 76-run knock in a losing cause in the fourth innings on Centurion Test.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma became the first Asian captain to win a Test win in Cape Town. Dean Elgar bid goodbye to Test cricket with a loss and two disappointing scores.
The win helped India climb to the top of the World Test Championships (WTC) 2023-25 standings. India have a win percentage of 54.16 after two wins from four games, one draw, and one loss. South Africa slipped to second place after their first loss in the current cycle.
India will have a chance to retain their top spot as Ben Stokes-led England tour India for a five-Test series starting January 25 in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Kohli will have a chance to complete 9,000 runs in Test cricket. He needs 152 more runs to breach the 9,000 mark.
