In the opening Test of the two-match series against South Africa at Centurion, Indian cricket stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah marked their much-awaited return to the field. However, when team captain Rohit Sharma announced the playing XI, notable all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was missing from the lineup. Instead, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur were included in the team. It was later disclosed that Jadeja's absence was due to an injury concern.

"Ravindra Jadeja complained of upper back spasms on the morning of the match. He was not available for selection for the first Test," the BCCI said ahead of the game.

Rohit, during the toss, shared his initial uncertainty about whether to bat or bowl first on the Centurion pitch, a decision made somewhat easier as he lost the toss. He also addressed Jadeja's exclusion from the team, confirming that the left-arm spinner was sidelined owing to back spasms.

"Wasn't too sure (on batting or bowling). We are quite aware of the conditions, we have been here a few times. We need to put runs on the board and the bowlers will do the job for us. We do understand the challenge of batting first with the overhead conditions and the grass, but the guys are up for the challenge. Everytime we come here, we come with high hopes. We've come close in the last 2 tours. We are pretty confident with our squad and the make-up of our squad," Rohit said.

"We are playing with four seamers and a spinner. Ashwin is playing in place of Jadeja. Jaddu had a bit of a back spasm, so Ashwin comes in and he is a quality spinner to have. Prasidh is making his debut, along with the other pacers Shardul, Siraj and Bumrah," he added.

This development is a significant point of interest as Jadeja's all-round abilities have been crucial to the team's balance in recent times. His absence posed a strategic challenge for the Indian team, particularly in balancing their bowling attack and lower-middle-order batting. The inclusion of Ashwin and Thakur suggests a shift in the team's strategy to adapt to Jadeja's absence, as well as the pitch and playing conditions in Centurion.

Rohit's leadership, along with contributions from key players like Kohli and Bumrah, will be pivotal in navigating this challenge and steering the team towards a positive start in the series.
