He needs to be fined or suspended: Vaughan on Kohli's stump mic controversy

Former English captain Michael Vaughan is not impressed with the way Virat Kohli reacted to the DRS not going his way in Cape Town Test. During an interaction with Fox Cricket, he said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should step in as incidents like these should not happen in international cricket.

On Day 3 of the third Test of three-Test series, Indian players got frustrated after they were denied the wicket of South African captain Dean Elgar via DRS. Kohli along with Ravichandran Ashwin and KL Rahul went a step ahead and said a few words in the stump mic deliberately which caught the attention of the entire cricketing fraternity.

“It’s so important that the ICC step in because you can’t act like that whether you are frustrated or not. Of course, we have moments like that on the pitch when you think something is going against you, and it’s absolutely right to feel frustrated. But, when you act like that as a captain of our game, the ICC has to step in and can’t allow something like that to happen,” Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.

Vaughan also added that being a captain of an international side, Kohli should have acted a bit maturely. On being asked about the steps that ICC can take Vaughan said, “He needs to be fined or suspended because you can’t act like that as an international captain.”

On the fourth ball of Ashwin’s over during Day 3's third session, umpire Marais Erasmus gave Elgar out LBW because the ball had hit him right in front of the wickets and below the knee roll. Elgar referred the decision upstairs and the ball-tracking showed that the ball would have gone over the stumps. The on-field umpire along with Indian players were left shocked after seeing that on the big screen.

Kohli was seen kicking the turf after the decision was reversed. He walked up to the stump mic and said, “Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.”
