The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce India’s Test squad for upcoming tour of South Africa. However, the board is not likely to announce the squad for limited-overs series. The reason behind posting the announcement of ODI squad is the domestic 50-over tournament Vijay Hazare Trophy that will begin on December 8.
The selectors will keep an eye on performers of the List A tournament and then announce the ODI squad. They will have ample time in their hands as the first ODI against the Proteas will be played on January 19. Also, the ODI squad (remaining players) is likely to fly to South Africa late in December or early in January.
Earlier Sports Tak reported that Rohit Sharma is likely to be named the captain of the ODI team. So far, Rohit has captained India in 10 ODIs including eight wins. He has led India to win in T20 Asia Cup 2018 and Nidahas Trophy 2018. Rohit recently took over the T20I captaincy where India whitewashed T20 World Cup 2021 runner-ups.
Kohli's captaincy future and astonishing numbers
Kohli had announced that T20 World Cup 2021 will be his last assignment as T20I captain. The 33-year-old is yet to make any announcement regarding his future as ODI skipper. However, the former head coach Ravi Shastri in an interview to India Today had hinted that Kohli may give up captaincy in the limited-overs format altogether and focus on his batting.
Kohli did not win a major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy in his tenure as skipper but he has the best winning percentage among captains who have led the side in 15 or more games. Out of 95 games as captain, Kohli has led India to victory 65 times with a winning percentage of 70.43.
