India’s stand-in ODI skipper KL Rahul has made it clear that he will be opening the innings for India in the upcoming three-ODI series against South Africa in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Rahul will not be playing in the middle order which he has been doing in the previous few ODI series for India.
“Yes, I have played at 4 & 5 in recent times but with Rohit Sharma not there, I will be at the top of the order for this series,” the Karnataka batter said in the pre-match virtual press conference on January 18.
Similar numbers in both positions
At no.5, Rahul has scored 453 runs from 10 appearances at an average of 56.62 including one century and four half-centuries. He has scored a century batting at no.4 as well. While opening the innings, his average is slightly less at 53.90 with 593 runs from 13 innings including two centuries and four half-centuries.
“In terms of my batting position, we'll have to be flexible. Don't want to be predictable as a team. I may have to open at times and bat in middle order at times. And I'm ok with that. Everyone has clear roles but they know they need to be flexible for the team,” the 29-year-old added.
All-rounder set for debut
Rahul is also looking ahead at the 50-over World Cup next year. With that in mind, he hinted that in-form all-rounder may make his debut at Boland Park, Paarl.
“Venkatesh Iyer is an exciting talent. Fast bowling all-rounders are always important. It's a great opportunity for him. He has looked really good in the nets so far,” the stand-in skipper said.
Iyer made his mark in the second phase of IPL 2021 as he helped Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) make a comeback and reach the final of the season. He made headlines in last year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy too with his all-round performance.
"It's very important to have a sixth bowling option. We have Venkatesh Iyer as well. Of course, things are being done going forward with the World Cup next year," he further added.
