Sanju Samson runs riot with the bat

Sanju Samson was a force to reckon in the series opener as he took charge of the Indian innings after a shaky start. Partnering with captain Suryakumar Yadav, he accelerated the scoring rate, contributing a rapid 35 runs off just 20 balls in the powerplay. This aggressive approach put immense pressure on the South African bowlers from the outset. It was due to his lightning knock India posted a big target of 203 for the hosts. In reply, South Africa crumbled under pressure and were restricted to just 141 to eventually lose the match by 61 runs.

With this impressive knock, Samson joined an elite group of Indian batters with multiple T20I centuries, including Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul. While 11 Indian batters have achieved T20I centuries, only these four have accomplished the feat more than once.

Despite his consistent success in the Indian Premier League with the Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson's T20I career has been characterized by intermittent opportunities since his debut in 2015. However, his recent stellar performances have highlighted his potential to become a permanent fixture in the Indian T20I team.

"Really enjoyed my time in the middle. Playing it well, maximum utilisation of my current form you can say...The intent, we have been talking about being aggressive and keeping the team ahead of yourselves. Once you play three-four balls you are looking for the boundary, I'm not thinking much, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't, happy it worked out well today," Samson said in the post-match presentation.

Samson later shared insights into the support he received from Gambhir and Suryakumar during his time with the team. He would often discuss the valuable guidance and encouragement he gained from these experienced players.

"When you have a supporting captain like Suryakumar yadav and Gautam bhai and VVS Laxman sir, they all support you during failures," the Kerala batter further said.

"The communication you get during failures is important. I got a lot of tips from Gautam bhai and Surya to work on. They would say, your play against spin needs improvement. Get the spinners from Kerala and play on rough wickets. So if you have the Indian captain on call telling you what to work on, you have the confidence from the skipper that he wants you to do well. So all those small things plays a huge role," Samson concluded.
