Mendis continues his recovery from a severe hamstring tear suffered during the early stages of the Lanka Premier League. His spot in the squad was handed to Niroshan Dickwella, who is expected to retain his place after making an impactful 80-run contribution in the first innings at Galle.

Chandimal’s absence stems from mandatory safety guidelines, as ICC concussion protocols enforce a strict seven-day layout for affected players following his fourth-day departure in the first Test. That premature exit opened the door for Pasindu Sooriyabandara to make his Test debut; despite registering a second-innings duck, Sooriyabandara is positioned to keep his spot in the playing XI as Sri Lanka scrambles to field a competitive batting lineup.
Pathum Nissanka uncertain for series-decider
Pathum Nissanka's inclusion remains on thin ice as he continues rehabbing his wrist following a June operation. Although his recovery is further along than Mendis's, the top-order batter is still dealing with persistent pain during netting sessions, putting his availability for the upcoming match in serious doubt.

Addressing the mounting selection challenges, Sri Lanka head coach Gary Kirsten confirmed that Mendis faces an extended spell on the sidelines with a severe hamstring strain, while Chandimal remains unavailable for the second Test.
