The India-Sri Lanka rivalry shifts gears as the two teams prepare to battle it out in a three-match ODI series. After a dominant 3-0 clean sweep in the T20I series, India enter the ODI series as clear favorites. The series marks the return of two cricketing stalwarts, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to the Indian ODI setup. Rohit will take the reins as captain, a role he will hold until the 2025 Champions Trophy. Kohli's return to the number three position is also a significant development. Shreyas Iyer, making a comeback to the team after being dropped from the BCCI central contract list, is set to bat at number four.
This ODI series holds added importance for India as it will be their only 50-over matches in 2024. With no ODIs played so far this year, the team will look to gain valuable match practice before facing England in the build-up to the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Notably, several members of the Indian T20I squad will be returning home as the team shifts its focus to the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Among those departing are five players who were not part of the ODI squad. Former T20I vice-captain Hardik Pandya, who was in contention for the full-time captaincy, will be heading back. Suryakumar Yadav, another key player, will also return as he is not part of the ODI setup. The list of players returning home also includes Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson. Samson, who played both T20Is against Sri Lanka, unfortunately, departed without scoring in either match. Shubman Gill, originally in the playing XI, was replaced by Samson in the second T20I due to a neck spasm.
