India and West Indies players have been fined five per cent and 10 per cent of their match fees respectively by International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over rate.
Both India and West Indies did not complete the innings in the allotted time and have been handed fines by the apex cricket board. India fell an over short whereas West Indies fell two overs short.
“The fines were in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses. According to the law, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, subject to a cap of 50 per cent of the match fee,” the ICC mentioned in its press release.
Both team captains Hardik Pandya and Rovman Powell admitted to the offense and there was no need for an additional hearing.
“The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Gregory Brathwaite and Patrick Gustard, along with third umpire Nigel Duguid and fourth umpire Leslie Reifer,” the release further mentioned.
West Indies started off the five-T20I series win with a close four-run win over Hardik Pandya-led India at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad on August 3.
After Powell won the toss, he opted to bat first. The hosts lost early wickets but contributions from skipper and Nicholas Pooran helped them post 149/6.
In reply, India did not get off to a good start and lost wickets at regular intervals. In the end, India lost the match by four runs despite Arshdeep Singh's late charge.
“We were right in the chase and quite comfortable there. We made some errors which costed us the game which is fine. A young team will make mistakes. We will grow together. Throughout the game, we were in control of the game which was the positive in this game,” Pandya said in the post-match presentation.
“Good four games coming ahead. In T20 cricket, if you lose wickets, it becomes difficult to chase down any total, that's exactly what happened. A couple of hits can change the momentum towards you. When we lost a couple of wickets, that halted our chase,” he added.
