IND vs WI, 4th T20I: ‘Hardik doesn’t have to be Dhoni' — Ex-India cricketer defends Pandya amidst controversy over denying Tilak Varma's fifty

The Indian cricket community has been abuzz with reactions after Hardik Pandya's decision to hit a six to complete India's chase in the third T20I against West Indies which the Men in Blue won by seven wickets. This choice denied his teammate, Tilak Varma, the opportunity to complete a half-century. While chasing target of 160 runs, Varma was just a run away from achieving his milestone. Instead, Pandya sealed the victory for India, leaving Varma stranded on 49.

The move drew widespread backlash from fans who labeled Pandya's decision as 'selfish'. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism and debates over the captain's decision, with many pointing to the sportsmanship of former Indian skipper MS Dhoni as an ideal. Dhoni, during his leadership, often showcased his penchant for allowing his partners to achieve personal milestones or finish the game.

However, coming to Pandya's defense was former India cricketer and now cricket analyst Aakash Chopra. Drawing upon the distinction between Dhoni's style of leadership and Pandya's, Chopra emphasized that while taking cues from role models is valuable, individuality is equally significant.

Speaking candidly on his YouTube channel, in a statement highlighted by Sportskeeda, Chopra pointed out, "Hardik Pandya has been trolled a lot. He has got a lot of criticism, but then there is another school of thought that why are you making so much noise about a milestone? So he is in the middle of conversations."

Drawing parallels to Dhoni's strategic moves in the past, Chopra noted, "I remember MS Dhoni defending a ball as he wanted Virat Kohli, who was at the other end, to finish it off. So that was Dhoni, but Hardik does not have to be Dhoni. He doesn't need to do or become like Dhoni even if he considers him his idol."

The controversy underscores the often delicate balance between team objectives and individual achievements in cricket. While the debate continues among fans, experts like Chopra urge for a broader perspective that recognizes the complexities of in-game decisions.
