Following a 2-3 defeat in the T20I series against West Indies, India's head coach Rahul Dravid emphasised the imperative need to enhance their batting depth.

Throughout the series, India's line-up saw a pronounced tail, featuring players such as Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mukesh Kumar. The batting order had spin all-rounder Axar Patel positioned at number seven. In the decisive match, a lacklustre acceleration during the death overs meant India settled for a modest 165/9. West Indies comfortably surpassed this score with two overs remaining.

Addressing the issue, Dravid remarked, "In terms of our squad here, probably it didn't allow us the flexibility to change the combinations. However, going forward, we need to focus on areas for improvement."

"We are keen on bolstering the depth in our batting. It's pivotal that we don't compromise our bowling strength but ensure we possess considerable batting depth," added Dravid.

Highlighting the contrast, he pointed out that the West Indies team had a robust tail, with Alzarri Joseph - capable of hefty shots - batting at number 11. Dravid observed, "Given the rising scores in T20s, teams like West Indies that have batting depth pose a challenge. We must address this, as the series has spotlighted this deficit."

All three debutants have shown promise: Rahul Dravid

The series also witnessed the debut of Tilak Varma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mukesh Kumar in the T20I format. Their performances left a positive impression on Dravid. "All three debutants have shown promise. Jaiswal's innings in the fourth match showcased his potential. His IPL performances have been commendable, and it was encouraging to see that translate into international cricket," said Dravid.

Praising Varma, Dravid noted, "Tilak's proactive playstyle and positive intent were evident. His fielding was exceptional throughout the series, and he even demonstrated his bowling skills."

Before marking his T20 debut, Mukesh had also represented India in the Test and 50-over formats. On this, Dravid commented, "Mukesh's debut in all formats of this series was notable. His prowess, especially at the death against formidable hitters, was commendable given his experience level.
