Guiding India to an indomitable target against West Indies was young star Yashasvi Jaiswal, who completed his ton on Day 2 and is currently going strong at 143 runs heading into stumps on Day 3 of the first Test in Roseau, Dominica on Thursday, July 13.
In doing so, the 21-year-old left-handed batter also joined an esteemed group of legends, while breaking multiple records on the way. Here, we take a look at all such records he broke on the way to his ton.
1. Jaiswal is the 17th player to score a century on his Test debut. He now stands alongside Lala Amarnath (118), Deepak Shodhan (110), AG Kripal Singh (100*), Abbas Ali Baig (112), Hanumant Singh (105), Gundappa Vishwanath (137), Surinder Amarnath (124), Mohammad Azharuddin (110), Pravin Amre (103), Sourav Ganguly (131), Virender Sehwag (105), Suresh Raina (120), Shikhar Dhawan (187), Rohit Sharma (177), Prithvi Shaw (134), and Shreyas Iyer (105).
2. He is also just the seventh Indian batter to hit an overseas century on his Test debut. This list includes Abbas Ali Baig (112 vs. ENG in Manchester), Surinder Amarnath (124 vs. NZ in Auckland), Pravin Amre (103 vs. SA in Durban), Sourav Ganguly (131 vs. ENG at Lord's), Virender Sehwag (105 vs. SA in Bloemfontein), and Suresh Raina (120 vs. SL in Colombo).
3. Jaiswal set a new record for the most runs scored by a batter on his Test debut at an overseas venue. With an unbeaten 143, he surpassed Sourav Ganguly's 27-year-old record of 131 runs against England at Lord's.
4. He is also just one of three openers after Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw to score a century on their Test debut. Dhawan scored 187 against Australia in 2013, while Shaw scored 134 against the West Indies in 2018.
5. Jaiswal is now the third India batter to score a century on his Test debut against West Indies, after Rohit Sharma (177) and Prithvi Shaw (134).
6. At 21 years and 197 days old, Jaiswal is the fourth-youngest Indian batter to score a century on his Test debut. He follows Prithvi Shaw (18 years, 329 days), Abbas Ali Baig (20 years, 126 days), and Gundappa Vishwanath (20 years, 276 days).
7. Jaiswal set a new record for the most balls faced by an Indian on Test debut. He faced 350 balls, surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin's previous record of 322 balls against England in 1984.
8. Rohit and Jaiswal made history by breaking a 44-year-old record set by Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan. Their remarkable partnership of 229 runs for the first wicket surpassed Gavaskar and Chauhan's previous record of 213 runs, which was the highest for India outside Asia in Test matches.
9. Yashasvi and Rohit achieved multiple milestones during their partnership. They broke Virender Sehwag and Wasim Jaffer's 17-year-old record of 159 runs for the first wicket, setting a new highest opening partnership for India in Tests against the West Indies.
Additionally, they surpassed Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar's 21-year-old record of 201 runs to establish a new highest-opening partnership for India against the West Indies. Notably, their partnership of 229 runs also marked the first time an Indian opening pair took the first innings lead in Test matches.
