India's swashbuckling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja toyed with West Indies' middle-order as he broke former India captain Kapil Dev's 29-year-old ODI record. Jadeja surpassed Dev's tally to become India's highest wicket-taker against West Indies in ODI history.
Jadeja now has 44 wickets from 30 ODIs a strike rate of 35.06 and economy rate of 4.90 runs per over including one four-fer and one fifer. Dev held the previous record as he had 43 wickets from 42 ODis at a strike rate of 47.74 and economy rate of 3.62 runs per over including one four-fer.
Jadeja also equalled Courtney Walsh's record of most wickets in India vs West Indies ODI history. Walsh has 44 wickets from 38 ODIs at a strike rate of 44.70 and economy rate of 3.24 runs per over including two four-fers. In the next match, Jadeja will have a chance to surpass Walsh to reach the summit.
Jadeja took a three-fer against Shai Hope-led West Indies. Shimron Hetmyer got bowled trying to play a rash shot. Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli took exceptional catches at slips to help Jadeja dismiss Rovman Powell and Romario Shephered respectively.In the six overs he bowled, he took three wickets and conceded 37 runs.
Jadeja also combined with Kuldeep Yadav to take take seven wickets and bundle out West Indies for a paltry score of 114. This was the first time two Indian left-arm spinners have accounted for seven wickets in an ODI match.
West Indies got all out in just 23 overs. This was the first time India bowled out an opponent in ODIs in less than 25 overs. West Indies registered their lowest score at home against India in ODIs.
Jadeja contributed with the bat as well. The southpaw scored 16 runs from 21 balls including one boundary. India chased down the target from 22.5 overs. The visitors won the first ODI by five wickets with 163 balls to spare. This is India's biggest win on Caribbean soil in terms of balls remaining.
