West Indies' 'Player of the match' fined for arguing with umpire during 2nd T20I

West Indies' in-form wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching code of conduct in the second T20I of the five-T20I series against India.

“Pooran flouted Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match,” the ICC’s press release mentioned.

In the fourth over of West Indies' run chase, Kyle Mayers was given out lbw off Arshdeep Singh's bowling. The decision was reviewed. Pooran got into an argument with the umpire as he felt that the opener was not out. However, the decision was not reversed as the review showed two reds. Mayers had to walk back to the pavilion due to umpire’s call.

“There was no need for a formal hearing after Pooran admitted to the offence and accepted the sanctions levelled by on-field umpires Leslie Reifer and Nigel Duguid, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth official Patrick Gustard and proposed by match referee Richie Richardson,” the release further mentioned.

West Indies were reduced to 32/3 in the fourth over. The wicketkeeper went ballistic against Ravi Bishnoi and hit the leggie for one six, three fours. He shared crucial partnerships with skipper Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer. The southpaw scored 67 runs from 40 balls including six fours and four sixes.

However, in the end, cameos from tailenders Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph helped West Indies get over the line with seven balls to spare. The two-wicket win helped the hosts take a 2-0 lead in the series.

“Satisfied that I performed. Something that I have been looking for in the last couple of years, so be there and finish games. I want to be consistent. I have been working so hard, I have made a lot of mistakes, lost a lot of games for my teams. I want to entertain the fans as much as possible. It's about being positive and confident,” the 27-year-old said in the post-match presentation.
