Addressing the media ahead of Sunday's series opener against Afghanistan, Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer refrained from revealing who will stride out to open the batting. Navigating a top-order bottleneck featuring Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi presents a formidable selection puzzle for Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Acknowledging the difficulty of leaving out top talent, Iyer noted that the team management would delay finalizing the combination until closer to match time.

The dilemma comes on the heels of Sooryavanshi’s Player of the Series campaign in Zimbabwe, where the teenager opened the batting alongside Abhishek across all three fixtures while Samson rested. The selection strategy surrounding both Samson and Sooryavanshi had previously drawn sharp scrutiny during tours of Ireland and England, where consistent playing time proved hard to come by for both batters.
That European swing saw both players given brief three-match runs before being rotated out following quiet outings. Samson featured in both games in Ireland and the opener against England before making way for Sooryavanshi, who took over for the next three matches against Harry Brook’s side. Though Samson returned for the final match of that series, he was subsequently rested for the Zimbabwe trip, paving the way for the current three-way selection battle.

Speaking to the press on Saturday, Iyer highlighted the luxury of choice rather than the headache, noting that having all three dynamic options in the squad is a major asset. He acknowledged that while leaving out a top performer will be a tough decision, the primary focus remains team success, emphasizing that clear communication from both himself and the coach will ensure whichever player sits out retains full confidence for when their next chance arrives.
“All three of them (Abhishek, Sanju and Sooryavanshi), having them in the team is a luxury first of all, and they are flawless in their own departments. Well, it is going to be a tight call because they have been performing consistently. And see, whoever gets the opportunity, it's definitely for the team's benefit,” Iyer said in the pre-match presser.
“And the player sitting outside, it's important that I have an interaction with him, along with the coach and give them that confidence. That you know what, no matter what, you will get your opportunity when the day comes,” he added.
