Deepti Sharma's smart move to dismiss England's Charlie Dean led to huge backlash and divided opinions of fans, former cricketers. Many questioned Deepti’s sportsman spirit as they felt that the Indian off-spinner had no intention of bowling the ball and waited for Charlie to leave the crease. On her return to India, Deepti revealed the plan behind the dismissal of England’s bowling all-rounder.
“It was our plan because she was doing it repeatedly. We had also warned her. So, according to the guidelines of the rules we did it,” the Indian all-rounder told the reporters.
Since the run out created controversy, fans have been sharing a photo of Deepti watching Charlie leaving the crease early from short cover when Renuka Thakur was bowling.
The run out sealed India’s win in the third ODI as they completed a historic whitewash. India registered a 16-run win in the third ODI and gave legendary Jhulan Goswami a fitting farewell at Lord’s.
Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) backed Deepti’s decision as well by explaining the rule again.
“MCC's message to non-strikers continues to be to remain in their ground until they have seen the ball leave the bowler's hand. Then dismissals, such as the one seen yesterday, cannot happen,” the statement read.
“Whilst yesterday was indeed an unusual end to an exciting match, it was properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more.”
MCC also said that from October 1, 2022, this mode of dismissal will not come under Law 41 which is unfair play. It will be shifted to Law 38 run out.
Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed Deepti as well after broadcaster insisted on an answer. “To be honest, I thought you will ask about all the 10 wickets which was not easy to take as well [on being probed about the last wicket]. It's part of the game I don't think we have done something new. It shows your awareness, what batters are doing. I will back my players, she hasn't done something outside the rules. At the end of the day a win is a win and we will take that,” Harmanpreet said.
