Harmanpreet Kaur-led India women's cricket team scripted history on Saturday (September 25) as they defeated England women by 16 runs in the third ODI to clean sweep the three-match series for the first time ever in English soil.
India gave a perfect fairy-tale farewell to their pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami who hung up her boots after the match. But what hogged more limelight was the way match ended which saw Deepti Sharma and Charlie Dean at the centre stage.
On a day when India women’s cricket team celebrated Julan Goswami, Deepti Sharma handed England a bitter defeat on as the spinner was responsible for a set batter Charlie Dean's run out which sparked controversy. The wicket gave India a 16-run win over the hosts as England were bundled out for 153 in 43.3 overs while chasing a modest total of 170.
The Lord's crowd turned on India's women team after England's Charlie Dean was run out with a 'Mankad'.
England looked to be closing in on an improbable victory in the final match of the series, with Dean – the hosts' No 9 – having moved to 47.
But she paid the price for leaving her ground early at the non-striker's end when Deepti Sharma took the bails off after entering her delivery stride. After a TV review adjudged her to be out, India's victory by 16 runs was secured.
Sehwag rips into England's outcry
Meanwhile, former India explosive batter Virender Sehwag ripped into England After Deepti Sharma's 'mankad' Run-out triggered outcry. He slammed England cricketers for creating unnecessary controversy over the mode of dismissal. "Funny to see so many English guys being poor losers. #Runout," Sehwag posted on Twitter along with a picture of the England flag with a text that read, ‘Invent a game, forget its rules.’
Sehwag also shared an excerpt of Marylebone Cricket Club's (MCC) Law 41.16.1, which states that "if the non-striker is out of his/her ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be Run out."
Talking about the match, India's Deepti scored an unbeaten half-century to help Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team India register a respectable total in the third ODI of the white-ball series.
Meanwhile former English cricketer also put forth their views on Dean's run out at the hands of Deepti.
"I find the debate of the Mankad really interesting. So many views from either side. I personally wouldn't like to win a match like that, also, very happy for others to feel differently," England pacer Stuart Broad tweeted.
Sam Billings took to Twitter to say,"There’s surely not a person who has played the game that thinks this is acceptable? Just not cricket…".

After the match, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur backed the all-rounder and said she doesn’t think that they did anything wrong. “Well, to be honest, I thought you will be asking about the first 9 wickets, as they were not easy to take. It’s a part of the game, I don’t think we have done something new. It shows your awareness, of what batters are doing. I will back my players, she hasn’t done something outside the rules. After the first game we discussed, we wanted to do really well, we have that much potential. We want to continue this kind of cricket," she said in reply.
