Ambati Rayudu questions IPL player retention rule.

IPL retention to take place ahead of the 2025 season.

Former Chennai Super Kings batter Ambati Rayudu questioned the Indian Premier League's (IPL) player retention rule after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won their third title beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Rayudu said that finalists should get an extra 2-3 spots while retaining the players in the mega auction.

All franchises will have to retain their four players each ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Former cricketers Amabati Rayudu and Kevin Pietersen weighed on the players that the franchise will likely retain before the auction.

Rayudu on Retention Rule

"And maybe, you know, the winner should get an extra 2-3 spots or maybe those who reached the final. They should get that because they deserve it, they played a brilliant season, so maybe they should take an extra 2-3 spots in terms of retention," Rayudu said.

Pietersen was not satisfied with Rayudu's opinion on the retention rule. Former England cricketer said that every single team need to get the same during the retention period.

Kevin Pietersen on Retention Rule

"No, I think that every single team has to get exactly the same because you want to build a franchise and you wanna build a squad. You don't just wanna go and say OK, OK, KKR. You played well. You just go. You go look after yourselves and the team that came last like Punjab, but they don't wanna I mean, maybe they do want to get rid of a few players. Maybe they don't, but, uh, I think it just needs to be exactly the same," Pietersen said.
