The cricketing world remains captivated by the future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League. Since his international retirement in August 2020, following India's heartbreaking World Cup semi-final loss, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has continued to enthrall fans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
MS Dhoni's retirement speculation continues
Having led Chennai Super Kings to IPL titles in 2021 and 2023, Dhoni stepped down as captain ahead of the 2024 season. While expectations were high for a potential retirement after the 2023 IPL triumph, Dhoni hinted at a possible return for the fans. However, uncertainty persists regarding his participation in the 2025 IPL season. Recent public appearances have only fueled speculation, with the enigmatic cricketer maintaining his characteristic silence on the matter.
Dhoni's Future Hinges on IPL Auction Rules
MS Dhoni has indicated that his decision to retire or continue playing in the IPL will be influenced by the number of player retentions allowed by the BCCI ahead of the next mega auction. He emphasised that there is ample time for him to make a final call on his future.
"There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team," Dhoni said at an event while replying to a fan's query.
The BCCI held a crucial meeting with IPL franchise owners on Wednesday to discuss the league's future, including the possibility of a mega auction, the impact player rule, and the right to match (RTM) card. Reports suggest that the teams are divided on these issues. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the IPL Governing Council will make the final decision after considering the feedback from the franchises.
Speculation surrounding MS Dhoni's future in the IPL has been a recurring theme in recent years. While the question of succession at Chennai Super Kings was addressed with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over the captaincy, the team's performance in the previous season, finishing fifth, raised eyebrows. Dhoni adopted a new role as a finisher in the previous IPL, showcasing his explosive batting abilities with a strike rate of over 200. His ability to hit boundaries consistently and remain unbeaten in most of his innings highlighted his impact on the team despite his limited appearances.
