Gaikwad's 98, Deshpande's four-fer and Mitchell's 5 catches help CSK romp over SRH with 78-run win at home

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered a comprehensive win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at home to reach the third position of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 points table. After Ruturaj Gaikwad's 98-run knock, Tushar Deshpande was lethal with the new ball getting rid of SRH's top order. SRH could not recover and were bowled out for 134 and ended up losing the game by 78 runs. 

 

Gaikwad-Mitchell help CSK recover

Ajinkya Rahane struggled against the new ball. He was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the seventh time. He scored nine runs from 12 balls. Gaikwad did the bulk of scoring in the powerplay overs. After six overs, CSK were 50/1. Daryl Mitchell tried to play himself in. Pat Cummins introduced himself in the ninth over and was hit for one six each by Gaikwad and Mitchell. Gaikwad reached his fifty from just 27 balls. CSK were 92/1 at the halfway stage.  Mitchell accelerated and reached his half-century from 29 balls. In the 14th over, Jaydev Unadkat got rid of Mitchell who got caught at deep mid-wicket. He scored 52 runs from 32 balls. 

Gaikwad misses another century

Gaikwad did the heavy lifting while Shivam Dube played a few deliveries to get his eye in. Dube hit T Natarajan for the first six of his knock. He hit Cummins for a six in his last over as well. In the penultimate over, Unadkat did not concede a single boundary. On the second ball of the final over Gaikwad departed and missed his second century of the season. His 54-ball 98 featured 10 fours and three sixes. MS Dhoni was dropped by Abhishek Sharma and the ball went for a boundary. Dube hit a six off the penultimate of the innings. His unbeaten 20-ball 39 helped CSK post 212/3.

Deshpande wrecks top order

In the run chase, Deshpande was hit for one six each by Head and Abhishek. On the fifth ball, Head failed to pick the slower ball and got caught at deep point. He scored 13 runs from seven deliveries. Impact player Anmolpreet Singh departed for a golden duck as the thick leading edge landed in Moeen Ali’s hands. In his next over, he got the better of Abhishek with a slower short ball. The southpaw scored 15 runs from nine balls. After powerplay overs, SRH were 53/3. In the ninth over, Ravindra Jadeja got the wicket of Nitish Reddy with a faster short ball. He contributed with a run-a-ball 15. After 10 overs, SRH were 78/4.

Easy win for CSK

Matheesha Pathirana was introduced into the attack and ended Aiden Markram's knock with a yorker. He scored 32 runs from 26 balls. Heinrich Klaasen and Abdul Samad failed to accelerate. In Pathirana's next over, Klaasen's sluggish knock came to an end. He scored 20 runs from 21 balls. Shardul Thakur in his spell got the wicket of Samad. Deshpande returned to dismiss Cummins. In the penultimate over, Mustafizur Rahman got the wickets of Shahbaz Ahmed and Unadkat to bowl out SRH for 134. SRH lost the match by a big margin of 78 runs.
