Mumbai Indians are lurching at ninth place in the IPL 2024's points table.

Mumbai Indians suffered a 10-run defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals in a high-scoring thriller.

Mumbai Indians' (MI) quest for a playoff berth in IPL 2024 faces a significant hurdle following their 10-run defeat to Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 27. Their path becomes even steeper as they'll need to win all their remaining matches to keep their playoff aspirations alive. This includes securing victories in away games against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), as well as home triumphs against both these teams along with a win against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Mumbai Indians' road to the playoffs

Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians' road to the playoffs isn't a straightforward one. While winning all their remaining games is crucial, a little luck wouldn't hurt either. They'll need some favorable outcomes from their competitors in the points table.

Ideally, they'd want the top two teams, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, to win all their remaining matches. This would clear the path for MI to climb the standings. Additionally, teams like Gujarat Titans, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants dropping most, but not all, of their games would further benefit MI's playoff push. However, the core objective for Mumbai remains clear: win every single one of their remaining fixtures. Only then will they have a fighting chance to qualify. A top-two finish is highly unlikely, but winning all their games would secure them an additional 10 points, bringing their total to 16. This might be enough to land them a coveted spot in the top four.

The defeat to Delhi Capitals undoubtedly stings for the Mumbai Indians. However, there are positives to take away. Despite a shaky start with their openers failing to score big, MI still managed to come close to chasing down a mammoth 258 runs. This showcases the firepower within their batting lineup. If their top order finds its rhythm and fires alongside the middle and lower order, MI can be a real threat in upcoming matches. They'll be looking to click on all cylinders and translate their potential into victories.

How the DC vs MI's match unfolded?

Talking about the match. the Arun Jaitley Stadium witnessed another high-scoring encounter in IPL 2024. Set a daunting target of 258 runs, Mumbai Indians put up a valiant chase but fell short by 10 runs. While their top order faltered, skipper Hardik Pandya provided a spark with a quickfire 46 off just 24 balls. The chase truly came alive thanks to a heroic knock from Tilak Varma, who scored a blazing 63 runs in 32 balls before being run out in the final over.

Delhi Capitals' bowling attack had its moments. Rasikh Salam emerged as the standout performer with economical figures of 3/34 in his four overs. Mukesh Kumar, despite being expensive early on (conceding 59 runs in his first 3 overs), held his nerve in the final over to seal the victory for DC, taking 3 wickets in total.

Now MI will next face Lucknow Super Giants on April 30.
