As the Indian Premier League (IPL) progresses, discussions about the T20 World Cup squad are gaining momentum. The T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for June and to be hosted by the USA and the West Indies, is drawing closer. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the fifteen-member squad led by Rohit Sharma for the T20 World Cup in approximately three weeks.
On this topic, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell humorously remarked that he hopes India will not select his RCB teammate Virat Kohli for the squad.
Virat Kohli is leading the Orange Cap race
Currently, Virat Kohli is leading this season as the highest run-scorer, donning the Orange Cap. He has accumulated 319 runs from six matches, including the season’s first century. Despite his role as an opener for his franchise, Kohli has faced criticism over his strike rate, which stands at 141.78. Furthermore, Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs in IPL history, having scored 7,579 runs in 242 matches.
In a conversation with ESPN, RCB all-rounder Glenn Maxwell described Virat Kohli as the most clutch player he has ever witnessed, referring to Kohli's match-winning 82-run innings against Australia in the 2016 T20 World Cup.
"Virat Kohli is the most clutch player I have ever played against. The innings he played against us in Mohali during the 2016 T20 World Cup is still the best innings I have ever seen been played against me. His awareness of what he needs to do to win the game is just phenomenal. I hope India don't pick him because it will be great to not come up against him," said Maxwell.
Maxwell also touched on the immense pressure faced by Virat Kohli and other Indian cricketers due to the vast fanbase and the country's deep passion for cricket.
"It's not surprising because there are 1.5 billion and I reckon half of them are unbelievable cricketers in this country (laughs). It's a hard team to get into. You look at India's top T20 players which are all playing in this tournament. They are phenomenal players and there should be heat on every player,” Maxwell added.
