The Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have announced a significant leadership change for the 2024 season. Hardik Pandya, the dynamic all-rounder, has been named as the new captain, taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma. Hardik, previously leading the Gujarat Titans, was announced as Mumbai Indians' new skipper on December 15. This change in leadership comes after a significant trade that saw Pandya moving to Mumbai Indians from Gujarat Titans before the retention deadline in November. During this period, the Mumbai-based team also traded Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Jayawardene, in his conversation with Jio Cinema, stated that while the fan reactions to Rohit's removal are justified, the team greatly values Rohit's experience and contributions. Rohit has been a pivotal figure for Mumbai Indians since 2013, leading them to five IPL titles, a record he shares with Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
"Absolutely, it's fair on the fans as well, everyone is emotional. We have to respect that. At the same time, as a franchise, we had to make those decisions. And having Rohit in the team to guide the next generation is very important. I think he has been absolutely brilliant. I have worked closely with Rohit, he is fabulous individual, fabulous leader," said Jayawardene.
Rohit, who has been absent from T20 Internationals for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final, will no longer lead his IPL franchise from 2024. Following India's loss in the 2023 World Cup final, Rohit took a break from cricket. He is scheduled to return to international cricket in the upcoming Test series against South Africa starting on December 26.
Hardik Pandya's leadership skills were prominently displayed during his tenure with Gujarat Titans. In their debut season in 2022, Pandya led the team to an IPL title, defeating Rajasthan Royals in the final, where he was also named the player of the match. In 2023, Pandya continued his impressive captaincy, guiding Gujarat Titans to the finals, where they faced a narrow defeat against MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling last-ball finish.
