This was Shubman Gill's maiden IPL season as captain.

Gill was Gujarat Titans' second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2024.

Gujarat Titans’ (GT) second game on the trot got washed out due to rain. The Shubman Gill-led side’s clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to incessant drizzle. Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 champions GT finished the season with 12 points. This was the first time they failed to qualify for the IPL playoff. After GT's campaign came to an end, Gill posted an emotional message for the fans.

“Not the way we hoped it would end, but it’s been a season full of learning and some great memories. I've been a part of this beautiful family for three years, and it's been a journey I will never forget. I want to thank all the fans who supported us and showed us love when times were tough. Aava De!” wrote the GT opener.

GT finished eighth on the points table. Whether they will remain in the same position or slip to the ninth spot depends on the clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and SRH on May 19. Also, if KL Rahul's Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) lose their last match of the season by a big margin to Mumbai Indians (MI), they may move up on the basis of net run rate (NRR).

Gill’s numbers

Gill was not at his best in the season. He finished as GT's second-highest run-scorer with 426 runs from 12 games at an average of 38.73 including one century and two half-centuries. His strike rate was 147.40.

The left-handed top-order batter scored 527 runs from 12 games at an average of 47.91 including one century and two half-centuries. His strike rate was 141.29. In the bowling department, not one GT bowler was among the top 20 wicket-takers in the season.

Gill to leave early with T20 World Cup squad

As GT's campaign ended early, Gill will be the part of initial squad which will leave for the Americas. The opener is not a part of India’s 15-member squad as Yashasvi Jaiswal was preferred over him. He is part of the travelling reserves.
