Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan lavished praise on the Indian Premier League's (IPL) governing council Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for announcing the two-year ban rule on players who declare unavailability after being picked in the auction. IPL has announced that any cricketer who declares his unavailability despite being picked in the auction will face a two-year ban.
Cricketer-turned-commentator Irfan Pathan reckoned that this is a good step for shaping the tournament. He took his 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) to share his opinion on this rule.
“Last two years I kept talking abt this. it’s Great to see the decision taken by @BCCI! Players who declare unavailability after being picked in the auction will now face a two-year ban. The IPL is getting stronger in many ways” wrote Pathan on his ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).
The IPL governing council has announced major updates for the 2025 season, including an increased retention limit, the return of the Right-to-Match (RTM) option, and a larger auction purse, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Franchises can now retain up to six players, with the RTM option reinstated, and the Impact Player rule will continue to be in effect. For the upcoming mega auction, the auction purse has been raised to INR 120 crore (approximately US$ 14.33 million), reflecting an increase of INR 20 crore from the previous year.
ESPNcricinfo also noted that the finalized retention rules will be communicated to the ten franchises soon. Notably, of the six players that can be retained, at least one must be an uncapped Indian player, while the remaining five can be either Indian or overseas players. Retention can occur through direct retention, a combination of retention and RTM, or solely through RTM options.
