Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes for Mohammed Shami's swift recovery following the Indian pacer's confirmation of a successful surgery for his long-standing injury. Posting on X, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that Shami will recover from his injury as soon as possible.
"Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health, @MdShami11! I'm confident you'll overcome this injury with the courage that is so integral to you," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X platform.
Mohammed Shami to miss IPL 2024
Mohammed Shami is aiming to ‘get back on his feet soon’ after undergoing surgery on his right Achilles tendon in London on February 26. His chances of participating in IPL 2024, scheduled from March 22 to May 26, seem unlikely.
"Just had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet.
#AchillesRecovery #HeelSurgery #RoadToRecovery," Shami had tweeted.
Shami sidelined with injury during ODI World Cup
Shami has been sidelined from cricket since India's ODI World Cup campaign, where he played a crucial role in the team's journey to the final with 24 wickets in seven matches at an average of 10.70 and a strike rate of 12.20. Despite enduring pain throughout the competition and receiving injections to manage his ankle, Shami has been inactive since then.
His absence will be a significant blow for the Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) especially after they traded Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in all-cash deal. Shami was the top wicket-taker for the Titans during their runner-up finish in IPL 2023. In January, Shami mentioned experiencing ‘some stiffness’ in his ankle but hoped to recover in time for the England Tests. However, those plans were dashed later in the month when he underwent a reassessment at the BCCI's National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Shami was initially part of India's Test squad for the South Africa series, but his ongoing ankle problem, which had already sidelined him from the limited-overs matches, led to his withdrawal. During Shami's absence, India have introduced Test newcomers Mukesh Kumar (during the West Indies tour) and Akash Deep (in the Ranchi Test against England) in the current WTC cycle, in which Shami hasn't featured. His most recent Test appearance was in the WTC final against Australia at The Oval in June.
