Star all-rounder Sunil Narine's blistering century against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday, April 16, wasn't just a personal milestone, it was a testament to the faith shown in him by KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir. However, Narine's scintillating hundred couldn't save KKR from losing the match to RR but his superlative knock turned heads for sure. KKR posted a big target of 224 runs for RR to chase. Rajasthan rode on Jos Buttler's robust century to chase down the colossal target with two wickets to spare.
However, speaking after his blistering century knock, Narine revealed that Gambhir's return to the franchise as a mentor played a key role in his resurgence as a batsman.
Sunil Narine credits Gautam Gambhir for century vs RR
Gambhir's belief in Narine manifested in promoting him to the top of the batting order right from the first match of the season. This decision proved to be a masterstroke, as Narine has repaid the faith with a century and a fifty already this season. He currently sits at number three in the Orange Cap race with 276 runs, only behind Virat Kohli and Riyan Parag. Narine himself admitted that the idea of him being in contention for the Orange Cap would have seemed like a joke before the season began. He credits Gambhir's trust and confidence for unlocking his batting potential once again. It appears Gambhir's return has not only bolstered KKR's leadership but has also revived a key player in their batting line-up.
"I think it would have been a joke because I hadn’t opened the batting for a few years. I had in the past but didn’t believe. With GG (Gautam Gambhir) coming back, he gave me the confidence and assurance that I will do good. I had to give the team a good start. The job is to give a good start, whatever the situation is. We have an understanding of the pitch. It won’t be easy. We have to make use of the powerplay. Try to pick wickets and restrict them to a low total as possible," Narine told broadcasters after his magnificent century.
Sunil Narine addresses T20 World Cup query
Despite a stellar performance with the bat, Sunil Narine remains coy about his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Earlier this year, Narine had announced his retirement from international cricket, even telling teammate Samuel Badree he'd be watching the tournament from home. However, when questioned again, Narine offered a reluctant response, stating:
“I think it is what it is. But we have to see what the future holds.”
Narine's blazing knock culminated in a 109 off just 56 balls. Elated by the superb knock, he received a celebratory hug from his mentor, Gautam Gambhir. After the defeat against RR, KKR continue to grab second spot in the IPL 2024's points table with four wins in six matches. Meanwhile, RR top the chart with six wins in seven games.
