Team India's search for a finisher for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 is still on amidst the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik Pandya was once the clear favorite for the role but but, things have taken a turn. Pandya's not-so-impressive performance in IPL 2024 has opened the door for other players. As per earlier reports which were doing rounds, unless Pandya starts bowling consistently well, he might not even make the squad as a specialist batter in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. His ability to contribute with the ball seems crucial for his T20 World Cup selection.
On-song Shivam Dube eyes T20 World Cup spot
Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) star all-rounder Shivam Dube has emerged as a strong contender for the finisher's role in the Indian T20 World Cup squad. In contrast to Pandya's struggles in IPL 2024, Dube has impressed everyone with his explosive batting.
Dube further solidified his claim on Tuesday, April 23 with a blistering half-century against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Chepauk stadium. He smashed 66 runs off just 27 balls for CSK, including seven sixes and three fours. No bowler, whether spinner or pacer, could contain his power hitting. This knock helped Chennai Super Kings put up a strong total after batting first.
Witnessing Dube's blistering knock, former India's star batter Suresh Raina thrown his weight behind Dube's World Cup selection. While the final decision rests with the selectors, Raina's publicly endorsed Dube's name for the coveted spot.
Former CSK's star southpaw took to X (previously known as Twitter) and tagged BCCI's chief selector Ajit Agarkar and urged him to get Shivam Dube in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He wrote:
"World Cup loading for Shivam dube ! @imAagarkar bhai select karo please."
Unfortunately, Dube's impressive knock wasn't enough to secure victory for CSK. In a remarkable turn of events, Lucknow Super Giants chased down the seemingly large target of 210 runs. Opener Marcus Stoinis stole the show for LSG with a stunning unbeaten century. CSK had set a strong foundation after electing to bat first. Their captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, anchored the innings with an unbeaten 108, while Dube's quickfire 66 provided a late boost. However, Stoinis' heroics with the bat overshadowed their efforts, leading LSG to a dramatic win with just three balls to spare.
CSK, who are fifth in the IPL 2024's points table, will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 28, while LSG, who are fourth in the standings, will lock horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) on April 27.
