Delhi Capitals suffered a massive blow as their newly recruited star English batter Harry Brook pulled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with just few days to the glitzy league's start. Brook took to social media and cited personal reason for his withdrawal from the glitzy league as his family is mourning the death of his grandmother. Recently Brook also pulled out of the just-concluded five-match Test series between India and England.
Citing the need to prioritize mental well-being and support his family during this difficult time, Brook requested his release. Delhi Capitals acknowledged and supported his decision in the face of tough times. DC bought Brook, who played last season for Sunrisers Hyderabad, for a whopping Rs 4 crore in the IPL 2024 auction.
Meanwhile DC franchise is fretting over Brook's replacement with just few days to the IPL 2024, which is slated to start from March 22.
Let's have a look at Brook's potential replacements for IPL 2024:
Jake Fraser-McGurk
Jake Fraser-McGurk, a 21-year-old Australian batter, is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Harry Brook in the Delhi Capitals (DC) squad for IPL 2024.
Known for his aggressive strokeplay, Fraser-McGurk holds the record for the fastest century (29 balls) in a List A match, surpassing AB de Villiers.
He continued his impressive form in the Big Bash League (BBL) and recently made his ODI debut for Australia, grabbing attention with a quickfire 41 against the West Indies. Cricket legend and DC head coach Ricky Ponting sees immense potential in Fraser-McGurk, suggesting he could be the X-factor DC needs. Reports suggest DC has already initiated talks with Fraser-McGurk. While he primarily bats at the top-order unlike Brook (a finisher), Ponting's expertise could unlock his potential and fill the void left by Brook's absence.
Michael Bracewell: An All-Round Option for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals (DC), seeking a replacement for Harry Brook (finisher role), could consider New Zealand's Michael Bracewell.
Here's why Bracewell fits the bill:
All-rounder: Bracewell Fulfills the finisher role similar to Brook, offering both batting and bowling capabilities.
Power Hitting: While his IPL 2023 stats (RCB) were modest (58 runs, 6 wickets), Bracewell possesses the ability to hit big at the international level.
Can bolster Lower-Middle Order: Bracewell can thrive in the lower middle-order with consistent playing time.
Bowling Versatility: Provides bowling options with his off-spin, particularly suited for slow pitches like those encountered by DC last season.
Josh Inglis emerges as potential DC backup
Josh Inglis, the Australian wicket-keeper batsman, presents a surprise opportunity for the Delhi Capitals (DC) following his unsold status at the IPL 2024 Auction.
Inglis' strengths align with DC's potential needs:
Recent T20 heroics: His dominant T20I series against India, including a maiden century, showcased his ability to score quickly and handle spin effectively.
Potential Backup Option: While Rishabh Pant is fit, his return from injury necessitates a cautious approach. Inglis provides a reliable wicket-keeping backup and eases Pant's reintegration.
Solid Batting Depth: DC's batting reserves lack depth, and Inglis offers a dependable option in that regard.
