Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Virat Kohli was livid with the on-field umpires after he was given out off a high full toss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 21. Kohli had a heated conversation with the umpires before leaving the field. After RCB’s narrow one-run defeat in the final ball thriller at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Kohli had another animated conversation with the umpire outside the boundary line.
In the video, Kohli can be seen having a conversation with the umpire. He is explaining his batting stance and was arguing that the ball was clearly above waist height. Meanwhile, KKR's Rinku Singh came near Kohli and started listening to them. He even shadow practiced as the two continued to talk.
It will be interesting to see whether Kohli faces serious repercussions for showing dissent to the umpire’s decision. While walking back to the dugout, he even smashed his bat on the ground, threw the gloves and hit a dustbin.
Before the match, in a video that viral on social media, Rinku can be seen saying to Kohli that he broke the bat he received as a gift while playing against spinners in the nets. Rinku even promised that he won’t break another bat he gets from Kohli.
Kohli achieves major milestone
Kohli achieved a milestone during his short stay at the crease. He smashed one six each off Harshit Rana and Mitchell Starc. He became the first batter to hit 250 sixes for a single franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 history. The opener contributed with a seven-ball 18 cameo in the unsuccessful run chase.
Skipper says no to controversy
While Kohli’s former RCB teammate AB de Villiers came in his support over the controversial dismissal, skipper Faf du Plessis who showed dissent to the umpire too tried to douse the flames after the match.
“It was crazy, rules are rules, Virat and myself thought that the ball was higher than the waist, I guess they measured from the popping crease, one team thinks it's high, the other doesn't. That's how the game goes at times,” Du Plessis said in the post-match presentation.
