Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler Avesh Khan accepted that his excessive celebration against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) was unwarranted and that he is regretful of the incident. In the match between RCB and LSG on April 10, unprecedented drama unraveled in Bengaluru, especially in the final over of the match with Lucknow needing five runs off it to secure a win. Harshal Patel bowled a near-flawless over where he bagged the wickets of Mark Wood and Jaydev Unadkat.
In the end, LSG needed a solitary run on the final ball of the match with just one wicket in hand. Harshal attempted to mankad the non-striker batter Ravi Bishnoi but failed in his attempt. He then got the batter run-out but it did not count.
Eventually, on the final ball of the match, Harshal beat Avesh but still took the run. Karthik didn't collect cleanly and Bishnoi was already halfway down. The fumble allowed Avesh to reach the other end as the duo began fierce celebrations after a hard-fought victory.
Soon after reaching the non-striker's end, Avesh threw his helmet to the ground and embraced his teammates who came running on to the ground from the dugout.
Reflecting on the incident, Avesh, in a conversation with The Indian Express said, "Yeh social media mein mera mahool bana rehta hai and helmet incident thoda jyada hogaya tha (That helmet incident was a bit too much, I shouldn’t have done that). I realised later that I shouldn’t have done this. It just happened in the heat of the moment. I now feel sad that yaar yeh sab cheez nahi karna tha."
After bowling tremendously well in IPL 2021 and IPL 2022, Avesh Khan failed to live up to his standard in this year's competition. The right-arm pacer managed to pick eight wickets in nine matches in IPL 2023, which was significantly less than his tally of 18 wickets in IPL 2022 and 24 strikes in IPL 2023.
